New Zealand Business Investor Visa – A New Pathway to Residency

New Zealand has officially closed its Entrepreneur Work Visa and is now introducing a fresh opportunity for experienced investors. The new Business Investor Visa is designed for those who will actively manage a business and contribute to the country’s economic growth, offering a clear and structured pathway to residency.

Key Highlights of the Business Investor Visa

Opening for applications in November 2025, this visa provides two investment options:

  • NZD $1 Million Investment – Invest in an established New Zealand business for a 3-year work-to-residence pathway.

  • NZD $2 Million Investment – Fast-track your residency with a 12-month pathway by investing in an established New Zealand business.

In both cases, you may either purchase a business outright or acquire at least 25% ownership, provided the minimum investment is met. The visa can be granted for up to four years, and applicants may include their partner and dependent children.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Investment: Minimum NZD $1 million or NZD $2 million.

  • Supporting Funds: At least NZD $500,000 to cover living expenses for yourself and your family.

  • Age: 55 years old or younger at the time of application.

  • English Proficiency: IELTS 5.0 or equivalent.

  • Business Experience: Evidence of relevant management or entrepreneurial experience.

  • Job Creation: The invested business must employ at least 5 full-time staff.

Eligible and Excluded Business Types

The visa focuses on productive, established businesses. Certain business types are not eligible, including:

  • Drop-shipping, gambling, or adult entertainment

  • Tobacco or nicotine product manufacturing

  • Convenience stores, discount shops, or fast-food outlets

  • Franchises

  • Home-based businesses

How This Visa Fits Into New Zealand’s Immigration Strategy

The Business Investor Visa complements the Active Investor Plus Visa (updated in April 2025), forming part of the government’s broader plan to attract international investment, talent, and global connections.

More detailed guidance, including a comparison with the Active Investor Plus Visa, will be released in October 2025.

For experienced investors seeking both opportunity and lifestyle, the Business Investor Visa represents an excellent pathway to live and thrive in New Zealand.
